Trussville
Country Club,
A Farmer's Dream, at last a Reality
Everyone in Trussville is familiar with Chalkville Mountain Road
and Hwy 11 as the downtown crossroads and once the only traffic
light in Trussville. However, leaving Trussville on Chalkville
Mountain Road, some are not aware of the name change to Roper
Road. This is a story of a dreamer, Murray Roper, and the dream
of a private golf course in Trussville, Alabama.
Murray Roper, a dairy farmer in Trussville, said goodbye to the
cows and goats and hello to a new obsession…. GOLF, in early
1966.
Murray had only played the game three or four times, when he and
his buddies went to play Roebuck Golf Course and were disappointed
at the crowds and the wait. Soon after, Murray decided to take
his own farmland and build his own golf course. Starting out with
only 9 holes in 1967, the course was named Cahaba Valley Golf
Course. The course has seen many changes, with an addition of
an Olympic size pool, clubhouse, tennis courts, but in 1990 it
saw the most dramatic change yet. A new owner, PGA Professional
Chris Rigdon, bought the land from Mr. Roper.
Chris has taken this course into the next millennium, best known
for his work with children and golf, Chris continues his "Kids
golf Clinics" every Saturday at 2:00pm for members and non-members
of the now Trussville Country Club. Chris has helped many kids
reach their potential in golf. "Chris' Kids" are winners
of numerous tournaments in the southeast and even more thankful
to Chris for his help with golf scholarships and constant encouragement.
TCC is also the home course for the Hewitt Trussville Boys and
Girls Teams.
Chris has moved the new pool near the clubhouse and sold lots
for a new Country Club Housing Development near and around the
course. The dream of Murray Roper to have a private country club
in Trussville was reached soon after Chris bought the property.
The Trussville Country Club, complete with bent grass greens and
plans for a fitness center, already has party rooms and catering
available for Wedding Receptions, Birthday Parties and other special
occasions. Numerous planned activities are on the calendar each
month. Thanks to Mr. Roper for building the golf course by himself
with the help of only a bulldozer and giving Trussville something
that has become a great family sport. Thanks to Chris for keeping
the dream alive.
